Cop John Book (Ford) encounters in his investigation of a drugland murder a witness within the Amish community, an eight-year-old Amish boy. When the boy and Book's lives are in danger, they hide in the relative safety of the community. The boy's young mother, Rachel (McGillis) and Book grow romantically attracted to each other. The policeman's violent 20th century background and the mother's pacifist views make for a fascinating conflict.
