Luke Jackson is sentenced to two years in prison after a drunken, rebellious spree in a southern city. Dragline, the head of the prison gang hates his guts and tries all sorts of ways to break his cool. It doesn't work and Luke gains respect. When his mother dies, Luke escapes from jail but is caught. He escapes again and is caught again. While Luke eventually is left to die in the prison camp, none of his prison mates will ever forget 'Cool Hand' Luke and the legend he left behind.
